WHO I AM
why the hse and your insurance company advise on an expert racking inspection.
Warehouses are dangerous places. Accidents caused by racking collapse or falling objects are among the top 10 most common injuries. With the explosion in online purchasing for direct delivery, and the increasing pressure on pick-and-pack, the amount of warehouse accidents and injuries are increasing – accidents that cost you time and a probable insurance claim for personal injury at work. It’s no surprise then that the HSE and insurance companies alike are keeping a close eye on warehouse best practice, which demands an annual inspection from a SARI (SEMA Approved Rack Inspector).
SEMA, the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association is the industry body that ensures safe design and usage of storage and racking systems. The SARI certification is the gold standard of racking safety inspectors, who work to ensure HSE 76 protocols are in place. The absence of SARI approved racking certification may nullify employer’s liability insurance and result in fines.

FAQs
Do I need a racking safety inspection?
This is HSE’s advice as outlined in their document:
Can I carry out a racking inspection myself?
It is recommended by SEMA and the HSE in HSG76 that internal inspections are carried out on a weekly basis. The person responsible for racking safety must be trained in rack awareness. The annual inspection must be carried out by an independent SARI – SEMA Approved Rack Inspector.
What is a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector?
A SEMA approved racking inspector is someone who has passed enough rigorous testing from SEMA to receive a SEMA approved inspector’s qualification.
What do Rack Safety Inspectors look for?
Our racking safety inspectors have many years of experience within the racking industry. They will report on all aspects of racking damage and risk including missing or dislodged components, and the quality of the installation. They will also look at how the goods are stored within the racking and comment on the overall safety of the installation.
What type of racking needs to be inspected?
All types of Racking Systems require Inspections such as:
- Adjustable Pallet racking (APR)
- Drive-In/Through Racking
- Live Storage Systems
- Push Back Racking Systems
- Multi Tier Storage Systems
- Automated Racking/Shelving System
- Cantilever Racking, adjustable and structural
- Shelving
- Fabricated Racking/Shelving Systems
What do I get from a racking inspection?
On completion of the inspection, you will receive a copy of your damage report along with a site layout drawing. The damage report highlights the locations requiring attention and the risk, using the traffic light system.
How do I know a rack inspector is qualified?
All SARI Inspectors carry an identity card with their photograph and date of expiry of their qualification. These must be renewed annually subject to quality checks by SEMA.
